Kalasuri Ratnadurai Sivagurunathan was a (7 October 1931 – 9 August 2003) Sri Lankan journalist, lawyer, academic and editor of Thinakaran.

Early life

Sivagurunathan was born on 7 October 1931 in Kantharamadam in northern Ceylon.[1][2][3] He was educated at St. John's College, Jaffna, Jaffna Hindu College and Zahira College, Colombo.[1][2][3] After school he joined the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya.[1][2][3] He then entered Ceylon Law College, qualifying as an advocate.[2]

Career

Sivagurunathan joined the Thinakaran in 1955 and worked as a reporter, sub-editor and lobby correspondent.[1][2][3] He also worked for the Dinamina, another newspaper published by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited.[1] He was appointed news editor of the Thinakaran in 1957, becoming its chief editor in 1961.[1][2][3] He held this position until 1994.[1]

Sivagurunathan obtained a MA degree from the University of Jaffna whilst working as a journalist.[1][2][3] He was president of Working Journalists Association of Sri Lanka and a member of the Press Council.[1][2][3]

Later life

Sivagurunathan was a visiting lecturer at Sri Lanka Law College and the Open University of Sri Lanka.[1][2][3]

Sivagurunathan was president of Colombo Tamil Sangam and was awarded the Kalasuri title, a Sri Lankan national honour, for his services to journalism.[1][2][3]

Sivagurunathan died on 9 August 2003 in Colombo.[1]
